According to witnesses, there were several ghosts present that night, and one of them was a man who claimed he’d been murdered by three men after he’d gotten off his wagon to remove a stone from the road. As best as they could tell, the man identified himself as “Burns.” A reporter who was at the séance was intrigued and went searching through old newspaper articles in the Austin History Center. He found a mention of a man named Barnes who had reportedly been robbed and murdered on his way back from selling hay in Austin in 1871. The only detail that didn’t fit with the Eanes family’s story was the location. The article said the man had been killed seven miles north of the city, whereas the man buried on the Eanes property was seven miles southwest of the city.

Was the location in the article simply a typo? Was the man buried in the unmarked grave really this “Barnes” fellow? And, if so, had his restless spirit actually communicated with the psychic?

Regardless of the exact details of the murder, this much is true: something spooky is happening near the old Eanes property. For decades, young Austinites have camped out on Eanes Creek waiting to hear the “ghost wagon.” Those who have witnessed the eerie phenomenon say you know when it’s about to happen because all other sounds stop at once. The barking dogs, the birds, even the crickets hush. Then, out of the darkness, comes the gallop of hooves, the creak of wood and leather, and the rumble of wheels growing louder and louder on its ghostly ride.

Many have heard the phantom wagon, but no one has ever seen it. In fact, most were too terrified to stick around long enough to try. When a man named Joel Quintanella shared his experience hearing the ghost wagon, Bruce Marshall asked him, “What happened when it got to you?” But Joel just shook his head and admitted that, by then, he and his friends were halfway home.

What would have happened if Joel and his friends had been brave enough to wait for the ghost wagon to appear? Who—or what—would they have seen driving those horses?
